Brief introduction:
Edmodo is a social group tool like facebook and twitter combined, but made specifically for teachers and students.
Teachers and students have separate accounts, and the teachers can create groups for different classes.
This allows the teachers to post notices, assignments, tests, and other classroom details. It also provides for students to turn in assignments through the site and for teachers to grade and offer comments on such assignments so that students can have all of their grades organized in one central location. Edmodo allows for teachers to talk with students but also for teachers to collaborate with other teachers around the globe to find out what is going on in their subject area. This is great organizational resource for the classroom.
Advantages of Edmodo
Edmodo is very simple and streamlined, and is still developing. This keeps it from getting cluttered with random postings and junk. The teacher has complete control over all posts and all the content that is shown. All content posted is private and viewable only by the members of a group, unless it is specifically set to public view. Edmodo is quite efficient, allowing for students to retrieve homework assignments and even lecture notes outside of class.
The creators of Edmodo are always on hand to answer questions and help solve problems.
Although Edmodo may not directly touch the enhancement of learning it does allow for teachers to post links and videos for their group, this allows students to find and watch videos in one place quickly without having to find them. These videos can easily enhance learning if found correctly by teachers. This also directly works with the effectiveness of learning because students aren't searching for random videos but rather are looking at specific videos found by their own teacher or another teacher that is working in collaboration.
Edmodo contains an easy to view calender so that students and teachers can see what's due and what's happening when.
Edmodo is completely free.
Disadvantages (limitations) of Edmodo
There is no chat feature yet available on Edmodo, but communication is still easy via messages from student to student or teacher to student. Edmodo profiles are not incredibly customizable, which is not a terrible thing in its own right.
Application of Edmodo in Mathematics
Within Secondary Mathematics this site may have a few limitations simply to the nature of the subject having a lot of paper and pencil assignments however it can still be a great tool in order to integrate the outside world into the classroom. Edmodo can connect the classroom with outside businessmen in order to connect students to where math is used in their every day jobs. This is one of the biggest complaints in a math classroom; students don’t know where and when they will use the things that they are taught. Edmodo could be a great way to connect students to real people that years ago thought the very same thing.
Edmodo can also be very helpful in connecting students to teacher outside of the classroom. The students can ask questions to the teacher outside of the classroom and be given help on assignments right through the message posting. If the teacher doesn’t get to such a post quickly another student may also be able to provide very helpful insight on how to solve such a problem. It also allows for the teacher to post comments about tests or assignments as well as in-class worksheets in case a student may have missed a class. Overall it can allow students to stay on top of all of their work with one simple site.
